Adventures in E-Reading

The National Book Critics Circle Board of Directors runs the blog Critical Mass.  For about a month they are having guest bloggers write their response to the question: How do you see book culture evolving over the next decade?
One of the NBCC critics Mike Fischer wrote this about the future of book culture:

If reading is to survive as more than a cult activity, all of us need to create such sanctuaries. That means reading fewer blogs and sending fewer e-mails so that we can spend more time reading books. It means spending more time alone––learning anew how to really hear the writers we read––so that we can spend better and more rewarding time together.

Roxana Robinson, an author who just recently published a short story elusively to Amazon Kindle, has a similar take:

I’m an agnostic on Kindle. I don’t own one. I like actual books, and I don’t want to worry if I drop one in the bath, or leave it on a plane. But if other people love the Kindle, I’m all for it. Generally, I support whatever encourages reading.

And lastly novelist Elizabeth Benedict wrote her response to how she feels about eBooks in just six words:

Can’t help myself: still crave paper.

So, what’s your take?  How do you feel about electronic publishing and the future of novels?

  • “I’m an agnostic on kindle” hahaha! love that line.

I’m not fighting it like some people are. I don’t care if my book is an electronic copy or a paper copy. I just care that I can read with ease and comfort. I don’t trust that Kindle and Nook have the comfort thing down yet, so I’m sticking with paper copies for now…but I’ll convert eventually.

  • “still crave paper” :) lol so true though for myself. Turning the pages is what makes reading a book great for me. I like seeing all the covers of books on my shelves and sticking notes between the pages. Can you write on the pages in a kindle? I write in my books all the time.
